Celebrating One Year: Why Backyard First Birthday Photos Are Pure Magic with Allison Liffman Photography
Hi friends!
It’s Allison here from Allison Liffman Photography, your Cleveland family and baby photographer. Today, I want to share a little piece of my heart about one of my favorite kinds of sessions—first birthday photos, taken right in your own backyard.
There’s something incredibly special about capturing your baby’s very first year around the same place they’ve grown up—your home. The grass they’ve learned to crawl on, the porch you’ve rocked them to sleep on, the trees that framed their first seasons. These familiar, cozy backdrops tell a real story—your story.
Why the Backyard?
When families invite me into their yards for these sessions, there’s a comfort that shines through in the photos. Your baby is in their element. There’s no pressure, no rushing to get to a studio, and no harsh lights or unfamiliar settings. It’s just your little one, being their curious, silly, beautiful self—with YOU right there to join in.
First birthday sessions aren’t just about balloons and cake smashes (though I absolutely love those, too!). They’re about the snuggles, the tiny hands reaching for mom’s necklace, the giggles with dad, and the way your baby lights up when they see your face.
These Days Fly By
As a mom myself, I know how fast this year goes. One minute, you’re bringing them home from the hospital, and the next, you’re watching them wobble toward their first cupcake. The days feel long, but the years? They’re gone in a blink.
That’s why I always tell families: take the photos. Celebrate this milestone. And do it in a space that means something to you.
Make It Yours
Don’t stress about making everything perfect. You don’t need a magazine-worthy yard or a Pinterest-styled party. All you need is love, connection, and a willingness to be in the moment. (Though I’m always happy to help with styling tips if you want!)
So if you’re planning your little one’s first birthday and wondering where to take photos—look no further than your own backyard. It’s not just convenient—it’s meaningful.
Let’s freeze these moments together before they slip away.
With love,
Allison
