Cleveland Maternity and Family Photography in the Wildflowers

There are family sessions that feel especially meaningful because they capture a family right in the middle of a big transition. This Cleveland family photography session was one of those.

With two little boys, a baby on the way, and a field filled with late-summer wildflowers, this family had so much happening all at once. Their session was a mix of family portraits, playful moments with the boys, and beautiful maternity portraits celebrating the newest addition to their family.

The deep burgundy of Mom’s dress against the golden yellow wildflowers made such a beautiful combination. The setting felt natural and relaxed, while still giving the photographs that timeless quality I love.

A Cleveland Family Photography Session That Included Maternity Photos

When a family is expecting another baby, a maternity session doesn’t have to be completely separate from their family photos. Combining maternity and family photography is a wonderful way to document the entire family as they are right now—before everything changes again.

The boys were very much part of the story. From being cuddled by Dad to laughing with Mom and Dad together, their personalities came through naturally. Some of my favorite photographs are the ones where everyone isn’t looking at the camera. Those little interactions—the laughter, the hugs, the curious looks and the way everyone naturally moves toward one another—are what make family photographs feel personal.

And, of course, we made time for Mom to have a few portraits all to herself.

Surrounded by wildflowers, she was able to slow down for a moment and celebrate this pregnancy. The natural setting added movement and softness to the images while keeping the focus on her.

Why I Love Outdoor Family Photography in Cleveland

Cleveland has so many beautiful options for outdoor family photography, especially when the landscape is doing some of the work for us.

Wildflower fields, tall grasses, trees and natural trails create a setting that gives children room to move while also providing beautiful backdrops for more traditional family portraits. I love being able to move between posed photographs and the candid moments that happen naturally in between.

For families with young children, that flexibility is important. You don’t have to spend an entire session asking little ones to stand still and smile. Instead, we can let them interact, explore, cuddle, play and simply be themselves while I photograph the connections happening around them.

The family photographs we take before a new baby arrives become more than maternity portraits. They document a very specific chapter: two little boys, their parents, and the anticipation of becoming a family of five.
