Family Photos for Xanders first birthday with Allison Liffman Photography

One year of firsts, growth, sleepless nights, tiny victories, and a whole lot of love—all wrapped up in a milestone that somehow feels both joyful and emotional at the same time. To celebrate our son turning one, we decided to do something simple but meaningful: family photos.

Not just photos of him (though there were plenty of those), but photos of us—as a family. And of course, that meant including every member of our crew, especially our family pup.

Why First Birthday Photos Matter

The first year goes by in a blur. One moment you’re bringing home a newborn, and the next you’re chasing a busy toddler who’s discovering the world at lightning speed. Family photos at this stage aren’t about perfection; they’re about freezing a moment in time. The toothy smiles, the curious hands, the way your baby leans into you for comfort—these are the details you’ll want to remember years from now.

As a Cleveland family and baby photographer, I get to witness these moments for other families all the time—and becoming a parent myself has given me an even deeper appreciation for how quickly this season passes and how meaningful these images become.

Including the Family Pup 🐾

Our dog has been part of this journey from day one—standing guard during naps, patiently tolerating tiny hands, and adjusting to life with a little human in the house. It felt only right to include them in our photos.

Some of my favorite family galleries—both my own and my clients’—are the ones that include pets. They’re such an important part of family life, and those images tell a fuller, more honest story of this season.

Keeping It Real (and Fun)

We kept things relaxed: neutral outfits, a simple setting, and no pressure for everything to go perfectly. And honestly? That’s when the best moments happened. A laugh here, a cuddle there, a dog trying to sneak into every frame—it all added to the authenticity.

As a photographer, I always remind families that real life isn’t perfectly posed—and that’s exactly what makes it beautiful.

A Memory Worth Holding Onto

These first birthday family photos are more than just images. They’re a reminder of this season—tiny shoes, big milestones, and a family that’s growing together. Including our pup made it even more meaningful, capturing the love and connection that define our home.

If you’re a Cleveland-area family considering photos for your baby’s first birthday, this is your sign. Do it. Include everyone you love—furry friends included. One day, these photos will mean more than you can imagine.
