The beauty of extended family photos with Allison Liffman Photography, Cleveland Family & Baby Photographer
As a family and baby photographer here in Cleveland, I’ve had the privilege of documenting some of the most meaningful moments in people’s lives — tiny newborn yawns, toddler giggles, and the quiet love between a parent and child. But there’s one type of session that holds a special place in my heart and often gets overlooked: extended family photos.
I know how tricky it can be to gather everyone — grandparents, siblings, cousins, in-laws — especially when life is busy and people are scattered across cities or even states. But hear me when I say this: it is absolutely worth it. Here’s why:
1. Time Is Fleeting
One of the things I hear most often after an extended family session is, “I’m so glad we finally did this.” Life has a way of moving quickly — kids grow, grandparents age, and family dynamics shift. Extended family photos freeze time in the most beautiful way, preserving how your family looks right now, not just the highlight reel of birthdays or holidays.
2. These Are the Images Future Generations Will Treasure
Photos aren’t just for us — they’re for the people who come after us. When I look back at my own childhood, the photos I love most are the ones that include my grandparents, cousins, and great-aunts and uncles. Those multi-generational portraits become part of your family’s legacy. It’s one thing to know your family history; it’s another to see it in full color.
3. A Rare Opportunity to Be Together
Let’s be honest: how often is your entire extended family in one place? Maybe once a year? Maybe less? When you domanage to gather everyone, why not make it count? I take a relaxed, organized approach to these sessions, making sure we get beautiful group shots and the little moments — grandpa holding the newest baby, siblings laughing together, cousins being silly.
4. More Than Just a Group Photo
One thing I always emphasize: extended family sessions aren’t just about lining up for one big group shot (although we’ll definitely get that!). I break things down into smaller pairings too — grandparents with grandchildren, siblings, each individual family unit. You end up with a whole gallery of images that tell the story of your family in all its beautiful connections.
5. Professional Photos Take the Pressure Off
You could try to snap a few group shots with a phone and a self-timer, but the truth is — someone’s always missing, the lighting isn’t ideal, or it turns into a stressful ordeal. When you hire a professional (hi, that’s me!), everyone can relax and actually be in the moment, knowing that the memories are being captured with care and artistry.
Ready to Book Your Session?
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, planning a family reunion, or just want to finally get that “four generations” portrait on the wall, I’d love to help. Extended family sessions are some of the most rewarding and emotional shoots I do — and I promise, you’ll never regret making the time for them.
Let’s tell your family’s story, together.
